Salutogenisis: The origins of health and how to promote resilience and wellbeing

Pediatricians / pediatric providers are the go-to professional families turn to with concerns about their child’s health and well-being. Nearly 93% of children under age 18 years visit a medical provider annually and 68% of children seen in a pediatric health care setting have experienced traumatic or significant adverse events. Over the last 2 decades research has shown that Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can lead to a cascade of negative health outcomes : developmental, behavioral, physical, emotional and mental. The good news is pediatricians and pediatric healthcare providers have a unique opportunity to identify, address and prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences. By having an appreciation and understanding  of the universal  human stress response and how the environment children are exposed to effects biology which ultimately drives behavior and development, pediatricians / pediatric providers are perfectly positioned to impact current and future resilience and wellbeing of the children and teens they encounter.
